BCBS Does NOT Require a Dr. Referral for Counseling
General care for one’s well-being includes psychological, emotional and behavioral health care. In the past, insurance providers have had better coverage for physical illness than they offer for these. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act enacted in 2008 changed that. Since it was enacted, insurers have started to cover services for mental and behavioral health to include substance use disorders. Beneficiaries can now enjoy this “Counseling” coverage comparable to physical health.
This has been a fortunate event because many people choose to ignore the need for this kind of health care to avoid incurring additional cost that can strain a person or family’s financial resources.
Some people may also be deterred by the effort and time needed just to secure a Doctor or Primary Care Manager Referral for counseling; note that not all insurers require this. For instance, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) does not require one.
Getting Covered for Psychological Health
Almost all major health care providers now have packages for behavioral health services (counseling).
Some insurance companies require referrals from a primary health care provider before allowing you to seek specialized care and get covered. Others don’t require a referral at all. Instead the counseling practice is able to just include the process of getting an authorization as part of their internal services
It is therefore important to talk to a representative to determine the extent of coverage. The more you understand the content of your plan, the more you can explore the benefits when you seek health services.
The good news is that we at Carolina Counseling Services can verify your insurance, find out the limitations of your plan, copays, deductibles, etc. when you call to schedule your first appointment! We are happy to do that for you!
