Getting through the Holidays with Depression
The holidays are supposed to be the happiest time of the year. It’s when many people feel joyful and grateful in the company of family and friends. Yet, the National Institute of Health has reported that the holidays, particularly the Christmas season, is when some people tend to experience high a level of depression. Emotional/Behavioral health professionals note the significant increase in cases of self-harm incidents caused by depression.
Why Depression Comes during the Holidays
For many people, this is the season to be jolly; well, not necessarily. A North American survey reveals that the festive season is dreaded by 45 percent of respondents. For certain people, the holidays come with excessive stress. The feeling affects many people even those who have not been diagnosed with clinical depression. What is it about this time of year that may trigger a relapse or bout of depressive symptoms?
If you have depressive symptoms, the image of a perfect holiday is anything but cheerful. The shorter, darker days can conspire with the season’s stressors to produce more blues than merriment. The happy occasion is nothing but a painful reminder of the joy, love and things that you lack. The merry season may be a particularly difficult time to confront your loss, family conflict, divorce, loneliness, or chronic illness. Another reason may be your inability to handle the overwhelming demands of the holidays - shopping, cleaning, cooking, entertaining, parties, etc.
The Symptoms that Dampen the Holiday Spirit
Despite your best effort to hitch the joyful Christmas ride, you may still feel low. You may find yourself getting distressed or anxious at the thought of endless shopping or partying, unable to sleep, losing interest in doing routine and traditional chores, feeling irritable and hopeless. You may also experience some physical symptoms such as headache and digestive problems.
Understand that these symptoms are not the real problem. There is something not right or unresolved that makes you react in a depressing manner. It often takes a conscious effort to identify what is causing the depressive symptoms.
Take Control of Your Holidays
Untreated depression may cause you to dread the holidays. Instead of feeling helpless, take control of your feelings. If you can’t find the strength to talk about them with family and friends because you don’t want to dampen their mood, talk to a professional.
