How to Keep Anxiety from Ruining the Holidays
Who doesn’t love the holidays? They are a season of fun and merrymaking. But, for some people, it’s also a stressful time. As gifts, parties, and family activities pile up, anxiety may also be building up threatening to ruin the holiday fun. It is hardly surprising because there are various things that can contribute to your anxiety about the holidays.
Anxiety: The Flip Side of Holiday Happiness
There are a number of reasons why you may experience anxiety around the holidays. With so many activities and preparations going on, you may feel a lot of financial stress. There seems to be the need to be perfect in everything - the need to set up the perfect decorations, to fit in a perfect outfit, and perfectly observe family rituals or traditions. As the holidays approach, you get white-knuckled in anticipating the occasion.
The truth is that anxiety emerges when you are uncertain about what’s going to happen. You tend to worry about going home for the holidays. Despite being an annual tradition, you’re not sure how to feel when you’re in a social gathering or back into the family dynamics. You focus on possibilities and speculate about negative answers. You spend your time worrying in a non-productive way. When you begin to experience the familiar symptoms of anxiety such as sweaty palms, increased heart rate, trouble sleeping, and isolating yourself from people, you can’t feel the fun of the holiday season.
Proactive Ways to Handle Holiday Anxiety
The holidays don’t just come without you noticing them. Even if it’s a predictable season, you may still experience excessive worry, negative emotions and uncomfortable symptoms. You may have little control over the traditional activities and events as they unfold, but can proactively seek help early.
Fortunately, these symptoms can be treated so you can be ready to face the busy time of the year. It helps to talk about your condition to family and friends. Unfortunately, they may be unable to fully understand what’s affecting you, even if they have your best interest in mind. It can be more productive or beneficial if you will seek out professional help for holiday-related anxiety.
