One Less Wrapped Present under the Christmas tree
Christmas can be heartbreaking when you lost someone you dearly love. Everything you do will remind you of the person – the Christmas carols, putting up and decorating the tree, the parties, and shopping and wrapping gifts. So, you try to avoid what can trigger the cascade of emotions. You stop playing the CDs of Christmas carols you used to play and sing along with the family. You avoid attending and hosting parties and gatherings. And if you can help it, you don’t even want to put up or decorate the tree, knowing that the growing pile of gifts under that tree has one less gift to remind you of your loss.
The Surging Emotions
One of the most difficult things to do while in grief is to be cheerful. Yet, you are expected to rejoice because Christmas is such a festive occasion. You may feel so sad, being cheerful is a challenge. Yet, you don’t want to weigh down and negatively affect the rest of your family by being unhappy.
You may also feel guilty if you find yourself enjoying the parties and gatherings. You may think that it is wrong to be celebrating when you just lost someone dear. With these feelings of sadness, guilt and confusion, you may not know what to do under the circumstances anymore. This is the reason those in grief feel like they just want to crawl into a hole, at least until the holidays are over.
Making Your Burden Lighter
If you are experiencing intense grief, the brunt and the distress that the holiday season can bring can be too much. It will help if you can surround yourself with people who will not just support, but who can also understand what you’re going through. Relatives and friends may help you with certain tasks that you could not do on your own, such as shopping for the rest of the family when you can’t handle seeing possible presents you might have bought for that someone you lost.
It will also help to find a professional to help you survive the holidays after your loss. Unlike your family and friends, they will not only listen or share your grief. They can also help you face your grief and move on without guilt or confusion. You can get this kind of help from the therapists independently contracted with Carolina Counseling Services in Fayetteville, NC. If you wish to celebrate Christmas even when there will be one less wrapped present under the Christmas tree, call Carolina Counseling Services to request an appointment.
