Getting Help for Body Image Issues
Are you bothered by the way you look? Do you have a child who is being picked on in school because of their weight? Is there a family member who is avoiding food and constantly watching how the scale would tip higher or lower?
If you, or anyone in your family, are dissatisfied with the way you or they look, the problem may not be unique. In our world today is can seem as if society is full of men, women and children fixated on having flawless skin, a flat stomach, perfect figure, the list goes on and on. Overcoming negative body image issues may not be effectively addressed through cosmetic or medical procedures, it may be necessary to address your negative thoughts and feelings as well.
The Blueprint of Perfection
It is hard not be affected by this society’s overvaluing of perfection when it bombards you every day and everywhere you look - the glossy fashion magazines, the Internet, television, the giant billboards, etc. Mission Australia (2011) confirms that “Body dissatisfaction is the top ranked issue of concern for young people.” The statistics have risen alarmingly worldwide over the last three decades. The problem with body image appears to be pervasive, affecting men and women from all age groups.
What’s Your Body Image?
How you see yourself or your self-perception is your body image, this can be formed in childhood and can be influenced by your personality and/or self-criticism. A positive or negative concept of yourself can be developed and reinforced by the feedback you get from people around you. Even with a healthy, nurturing environment, the effect of media promoting idealistic, unattainable and highly stylized looks may affect the psyche of the people of this generation. This can cause body image issues.
Negative or Distorted Body Image: Are You Affected By It
Having imperfections is normal. Aspiring to improve is natural. This desire may become a problem if you become overly fixated on having a look that may be unrealistic or unhealthy. While cosmetic or medical procedures can change how you look, these are solutions that can only change your physical appearance. People with a distorted self-image may also struggle with self-esteem and self-acceptance that in turn can affect their emotions, thoughts and behavior.
The Importance of Positive Body Image
Self-acceptance is an important factor in having positive self-esteem. Having positive self-esteem can be essential if one desires to be less affected by media hypes and societal pressures. Unfortunately, this can be easier said than done as you try and fit to a perfection-focused society. The solution may not be resorting to drastic and dangerous solutions as this can lead to a constant seeking of perfection. This endless cycle can be seen in a number of celebrities today.
If you or a family member is struggling with a negative self-image, it may be important to get help from a counselor so you can work on self-improvement in a positive way. At Carolina Counseling Services there are licensed, independently contracted therapists available to help you better appreciate yourself. Don’t allow yourself be trapped by your body image; there is a healthy way to look beautiful inside and out.
