Helping Teens and Adolescents Move Away from Anger
Many people will experience angry outbursts at some point in their lives, though young people may seem to experience more than their share. However, some teens and adolescents may appear to be angry all the time, and their outbursts could come even without due provocation. This is when it might be time to take a harder look at this anger and find a more positive way to resolve it.
When Anger Becomes a Serious Issue
Harvard epidemiologist Ronald Kessler has identified one of the most common disorders in adolescents as intermittent and explosive anger. Typically this type of anger will, on average, begin at age 12, and is more commonly seen in boys rather than girls. Unfortunately, it can take a while before this issue is dealt with due to a natural tendency to believe that “acting out” is normal for teens.
It can be tough to distinguish between serious, violent anger and the usual outburst that a teen may be prone to. However, parents who observe that their adolescents have developed very volatile temperaments may want to objectively assess whether their children’s flares of temper are out of proportion to their supposed cause.
Angry outbursts in teens and adolescents could be considered serious when responses are out of control and/or become persistent. It could also be likely that the angry teen may destroy property while experiencing fits of anger. In addition, these episodes may be frequently marked with violence or threats to commit violence. While it may be natural for parents to believe that their children are abusing drugs or alcohol, studies show that this may not necessarily be the case. Substance use will need to be ruled out due to the tendency for young people with intermittent explosive disorder to struggle with substance abuse and depression, though this is not the only possible factor.
Adolescents and teens with this type of anger problem may display impulsive, aggressive behavior that is grossly disproportionate to the stressor that the behavior may be in response to. They may appear unable to tolerate frustration, experience intense anger, or appear plagued with feelings of guilt after an episode. They are commonly irritable in between episodes but can exhibit a mood change prior to an outburst.
Moving Away from Uncontrollable Anger
Anger that is extreme, destructive, and uncontrolled is often referred to as Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Studies show that teens and adolescents who have this disorder can suffer considerable disruption in their relationships and may be prone to doing poorly in school. This kind of anger can clearly have serious repercussions in the life of a young person.
It is important that help be made available to teens and adolescents who are unable to control their anger. If you observe that your child is flying into a rage, or if you see that this rage has become aggressive and potentially destructive, call Carolina Counseling Services and open the door to your child’s recovery where skilled and caring contracted, independently licensed professionals will help you and your child through this journey.
