Resolving Relationship Issues With a Third Wheel
Even the best love or romantic relationships run into a few bumps down the road; yours will not be any different. Like many unions, you will be faced with issues and conflicts. When these start to affect your relationship as a couple in a negative way, don’t ignore the signs and don’t become hopeless either.
Recognize the fact that you have the power to change the state of your relationship. One option you have in your arsenal is couples counseling (Insurances refer to it as “family counseling”.) It is a form of therapy that can help both of you identify and understand the sources of your conflicts, and what you can do to stay in your union happily.
“Love Doesn’t Make the World Go ‘Round”
Often, love has nothing to do with marital conflicts; conflicts happen even when you love each other. Yet, love has to be there for both of you to decide you’ll do what it takes to see better and happier days as a couple. The truth is conflicts happen because you are two different people with totally different perspectives, opinions, experiences, family backgrounds, etc.
Love can be very uplifting, however, you can feel deflated and hurt when your trust is violated. Love can be your strength to overcome many types of adversities, or can be your weakness if you allow your partner to continually treat you unjustly. If you can find the right balance you might just discover that indeed it can make “your world go ‘round.”
Stressors Straining Your Marriage
As a couple, your relationship will be potentially strained on a day-to-day basis having stressful circumstances affecting you individually or as partners. Illness in the family, tight finances and debts, different parenting styles and having problematic children, and different views are the most usual sources of marital conflicts. More serious stressors include unfaithfulness, jealousy and insecurities, and terminal or severe physical and psychological disorders.
Ignoring these stressors and not acting on the underlying problems can take a toll on your relationship. Dissatisfaction and misery can become too profound breeding anger, resentment and contempt. These feelings will blur your sense of fairness and judgment thereby causing you to argue more often.
Loving the “Third Wheel”
Most couples would want to keep relationship problems private, but spilling the beans can’t be helped as both of you would attempt to seek guidance, enlightenment and validation from friends and relatives. Unfortunately, they may feel strongly for one and not come up with a fair judgment; that can be the bane of your marriage and the last straw to your separation. If you must confide, choose the best “third wheel,” a licensed counselor who has experience in working with couples/relationships. Counselors are not only neutral; they can also be trusted to keep your private information confidential.
That is what Carolina Counseling Services can do once you decide to come to us to proactively work on your relationship issues with your spouse. Couples who acknowledge the importance of “effort” in keeping a marriage happy stand to have a very close, rewarding relationship. Let Carolina Counseling Services be the “third wheel” to assist you in achieving a happy marriage.
