Treating Physical Pain with Psychotherapy: Is it possible?
One reason you may see a physician is because of physical pain you feel. It is possible this problem may be emanating or contributed from your emotional state of being. Some physical pain cannot be alleviated by only a straightforward “medical” method. You need may need psychotherapy/counseling to assist in making the physical pain dissipate.
The Nature of Somatic Pain
Somatization disorder is a condition accompanied by unexplained physical pain, discomfort, and dysfunction. One theory suggests that the disorder is the human body’s way to bear psychological distress. Instead of experiencing depressive condition, you develop symptoms masquerading as throbbing pain. Oftentimes, this vague painful sensation affects different parts of the body and can be caused by factors of biological, psychological, and emotional origin.
Interchanging Somatic and Physical Pain
Many of the symptoms associated with somatic pain resemble those of genuine illness. You may be consulting different physicians, taking medications or undergoing physical therapy for a lingering pain that significantly interferes and affects the quality of your life. Although the recommended medical treatments can be helpful, they are not enough to completely recovery from it. It is important to keep in mind that taking inappropriate medications can be dangerous due to possible interactions of various drugs/medications.
Seeking Help for the Pain
The unexplained symptoms can often lead you to visit general practitioners who may suggest medical tests. Unfortunately, the physical symptoms are difficult to attribute to any medical condition, thus the numerous tests usually yield negative results. Studies show that the multiple symptoms of somatic disorder are most likely associated with discomfiting thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Knowing this fact can help you recognize the benefits of psychological treatment or psychotherapy as part of managing your pain.
There is enough evidence to show that psychotherapy and medication can effectively treat and reduce your physical pain due to somatic disorder. However, before any psychotherapeutic approach can be considered, you need professional help to evaluate your condition. The right therapist/counselor can explain to you about your pain and its possible causes before developing a treatment plan unique to your case.
The Solution to Relieve the Pain
Don’t let your pain functionally disable you. Don’t wait for the next severe pain to pop up in your body. Somatic disorder becomes a chronic condition when untreated. This highlights the importance of early assessment from professionals with expertise in physical therapy and counseling to prevent or limit unnecessary and expensive medical intervention. Call Carolina Counseling Services to request an appointment. Collaborating with a CCS therapist can be your best strategy to proactively manage and eventually bid goodbye to your pain.
