Depression can be, in the real sense, a matter of life or death for a marriage and family. It is so complex and its effects are so profound it can affect not only you or your spouse, but the entire family. If you will not pay attention to symptoms and seek therapy or counseling early, it can bring your marriage and family unspeakable, life-shattering problems.
Your children will be at risk of depression. Studies show that in the cycle of depression, children who grew up with depressed parents are unhappy. They are more vulnerable to this negative feeling and they are at high risk for antisocial behavior and substance abuse as well. Further, a depressed spouse will likely cause his/her partner miseries which may result in the marriage eventually succumbing to divorce. It is estimated that about 60 % of marital problems take root from this disorder.
The Effects of Depression on Marriage
Of course depression is not the only cause of a miserable marriage or divorce, but it does contribute to marital problems. This negative emotion may trigger unhappy events that can pile up and make the union wretched. According to the National Institute of Mental Health about 15 million (or 6.7%) of the American adult population (18 years and older) suffer from depression in a given year. This figure is staggering and probably contributes to the divorce rate in the United States which is now over 50%.
Couples unhappy in their marriage have the tendency to gravitate towards other diversions such as people or activities. Such tendency can cause couples to drift or breed other issues and differences. Depression doesn’t justify wrong decisions and actions, but it can trigger marital troubles. Knowing the extent of possible effects of depression, marriage or family counseling makes a logical intervention before the relationship goes beyond redemption.
Saving the Relationship: Couple Therapy Treatment
The couple needs to go through counseling together for the spouses to understand the issues that can be indirectly caused by the negative feeling. Understanding is usually the first step for one to forgive the other and for the unaffected spouse to become supportive of the needed therapy for their depressed partner.
Counselors can also help the spouses get to the bottom of their conflicts and to help them restore communication. A “couple’s therapy treatment” (which insurances refer to as “family therapy” is an approach that is often crucial in helping the spouses realize how each of them is contributing to their marital conflicts (which may be contributing to the depression).. A professional, licensed counselor has the necessary competence to thresh out the issues and address them for resolution of conflict.
Marriage Counseling Works
The research done by Lebow et al. (2011) on couples getting therapy reveals its positive impact on about 70% of those marriages getting treatment. This means that seven out of ten distressed couples are satisfied and optimistic that their marriage will work with marriage counseling. If you want your entire family to be happy, your marriage deserves all your effort.
